How to evaluate features of hiking backpacks under $100
When deciding on the best hiking backpacks and day packs, we looked at these features when comparing, especially since they’re all under $100.
Capacity
Most day packs will have a capacity between 10 to 30 L, and the size you need depends on the length of your hike and the things you want to bring along. For example, a 22 L pack was just enough for me to fit my camera bag, Nalgene water bottle, cap, and some snacks. However, if you’re hiking in colder weather, you may need more backpack capacity to store your warm layers.
Weight
If you’re worried about being weighed down while hiking, make sure to check the weight of the backpack when comparing options. Often, larger backpacks or backpacks with tougher material weigh more, so we want to strike the right balance when looking for the best hiking backpack.
Hip Belt
Fortunately, most hiking backpacks will have adjustable hip belts to fit different body shapes. That’s a nice feature to have because hip belts help to distribute the weight of your backpack to your hips, making it feel less heavy on your shoulders.
Durability
Scratches and scrapes are unavoidable when you’re outdoors hiking, so the best thing we can do is to look for materials and construction that can withstand wear and tear. In addition, sometimes when we’re tired we aren’t capable of accessing our backpacks in the usual careful way. Hence, durable zippers and reinforced stitching will be important to help a hiking backpack last long.
Number of exterior pockets
Having several exterior pockets in your hiking backpack is great because it helps a lot with easy accessibility and organization. For example, you could have a zip pocket at the top of your backpack to store sunglasses, and another pocket for a trail map or your phone.
Compatibility with hydration bladder
Many hiking backpacks have a dedicated hydration bladder compartment with a port for the drinking tube. This is a great feature because staying hydrated is important even on short hikes, and hydration bladders are a great alternative to bringing multiple water bottles. Even if you’re not a fan of hydration bladders, it wouldn’t hurt to have the option of using one in the future.
Back ventilation
Most of our hiking adventures happen in the warmer seasons, and that means having good back ventilation will help us stay comfortable instead of sweaty. Hence, we tend to prefer backpacks that have breathable mesh panels or a suspension systems that allow airflow between your back and the backpack.
