Which part of Osaka is the best to stay at?
Although most of Osaka’s main attractions can be reached with a short train ride, it’s great to be close to all the action. There are 2 main downtown regions in Osaka that draw countless visitors every day – Kita (northern) and Minami (southern).
In Minami area you have Dotonbori, the famous Osaka food street that comes alive at night. This is where you can find the iconic Glico running man sign. If you are familiar with the Singaporean way of describing this – it’s like a giant Pasar Malam or night market. You can choose to stay in Shinsaibashi, Nipponbashi or Namba which are at different sides of Dotonbori.
You could also consider spending more time in the northern part of Osaka, known as Kita or Umeda. Umeda is Osaka’s business and transport hub where you can find the JR Osaka station, shopping malls and attractions like the Hep Five Ferris Wheel. There is a popular place near the train station called Shin Umeda Shokudogai and it has a wide variety of food options. Besides that, there are also many other great restaurants in the Umeda area that you will enjoy.

Is it better to stay in Namba (Minami) or Umeda (Kita)?
People often consider either Namba or Umeda for accommodations due to their proximity to major train stations.
When considering whether to stay in Namba or Umeda, you should think about the activities you prioritise, your transportation plans, and the atmosphere you want to experience.
Upscale shopping holiday: Umeda
While both areas have a variety of shopping options, Umeda might be better if you are looking for a more modern and upscale shopping expeirence. You can easily find a variety of fashion, cosmetics and luxury goods in the Umeda department stores and shopping malls. On the other hand, Namba will offer a more casual shopping experience with a wide diversity of local goods in malls and shopping streets.

High-end dining experiences: Umeda

Umeda has a wide variety of high-end dining options in the department stores and the neighbouring Kitashinchi area. You can find luxurious Kaiseki dining, bars, and Michelin-star restaurants.
Although Namba also offers some high-end dining experiences, it is more well known for the vibrant Dotonbori food street and its casual atmosphere.
If you prefer a more comfortable and traditional ambience for dining, rather than an energetic and busy one, I recommend staying in Umeda.
Easy connectivity to other major cities: Umeda
If you are planning your Osaka trip as part of a larger multi-city itinerary, you can also consider the connectivity between cities and the airport when choosing where to stay in Osaka.
For easier connectivity to Kansai International Airport, it may be better to stay in Namba. This is because there is a direct train service between Namba and the airport but not for Umeda.
However, staying in Umeda gets you a direct train ride to Kyoto, Tokyo and Kobe. If you are departing from Namba station, you will need to make a train transfer at Shin-Osaka station. Nevertheless, the travel times are similar and it may not be a big factor especially if you are not bringing a lot of luggage along.
Pro tip: Courier your luggage to the next hotel to avoid bringing it through the busy trains and stations.

Proximity to cultural and family attractions: Umeda

Osaka has a lot to offer besides food as well, with both cultural and fun attractions to suit various travel preferences.
If you are staying in Namba, you will be closer to these cultural attractions:
- Namba Yasaka Jinja
- Hozenji
- Tsutenkaku
On the other hand, Umeda requires a shorter travel time to these key attractions:
- Osaka Castle
- Universal Studios Japan
- Cup Noodles Museum Osaka
If you prefer a more convenient train ride to Osaka Castle and Universal Studios Japan, Umeda would be the better choice. There’s not a big difference in travel time and only involves a train change if you come from Namba.
Night life atmosphere: Namba
The night life in Umeda tends to be a bit more relaxed and quiet compared to Namba area. In Umeda, you have upscale bars and sophisticated entertainment like theatres and concert halls.
On the other hand, Namba and the Dotonbori area is known for the vibrant and energetic night life. At night, the streets light up with neon signs and are filled with the aroma of freshly cooked food. If you’re looking for a place to go out with friends, there are izakayas where you can enjoy a casual dining setting. For late in the night food, just look for a nearby ramen shop that is open 24 hours.
If you are visiting Osaka to experience the bustling crowd and lively atmosphere of the food streets, Namba would be the better choice.

Definitive Osaka food trip experience: Namba
With Namba located near the top recommended food streets in Osaka, there’s hardly a reason why you should not be staying here. There is such a long stretch of shops along the Dotonbori canal that you will not be able to cover it all in one day. It’s better to space it out so that you can come back for more. You can also find other food and shopping streets nearby like Kuromon Ichiba Market, Hozenji Yokocho, and Sennichimae Shopping Street.
Nonetheless, you will be able to take the train from Umeda to Namba area easily. Even in Umeda, you will enjoy hunting for food at Shin Umeda Shokudoga. If you have more time, you can also get lost wandering the streets, finding hidden gems and underrated stores.
But if you ask me, there’s nothing better than having the kitchen of Japan at your doorstep. My choice will be Namba for if I wanted to have the definitive Osaka food trip experience.

Which area to stay in Osaka for first timers?
As a first timer, it is best to spend at least two days in Osaka to allow for enough time to enjoy the atmosphere and take things slow. Hence, I recommend staying the Minami area as the extra 10-20 minutes plus of travel time is likely not going to matter as much. Here, you will get to enjoy the energetic night life as well as take part in the bustling food scene within just a walking distance of your accomodation.
Among the various districts, Namba might be the best choice as it is the transport hub within Minami. Aside from that, you get the best of the modern and traditional aspects of Osaka in the form of shopping malls as well as lively food streets.

Where to stay in Osaka for one night?
If you only have one night, I recommend staying in Umeda as it is Osaka’s transportation hub with proximity to key attractions. There will be iconic Osaka food wherever you choose to stay, so you only need just one visit to the Dotonbori area. With a lot of shopping options and attractions nearby, you’re not going to get bored in Umeda.
Summary of best places to stay in Osaka and their travel times
If you want to stay near the best street food (mainly Dotonbori), the best places to stay are around Nipponbashi. For more affordable accommodation options, you can consider the guesthouses in Shinsaibashi and Nipponbashi.
Due to Umeda’s excellent connectivity to other attractions and cities outside Osaka, you can find international hotel brands there such as Hilton and the Ritz-Carlton. Hence Umeda might be a great choice for families who want a relatively easier train journey to Universal Studios Japan and Osaka Castle.

Best pass to buy to travel Japan
The new “Klook JR PASS” released in 2024

What’s covered:
- Round trip ticket between Narita Airport and Tokyo
- 3 days of unlimited rides on the Tokyo Metro
- 2x Shinkansen Tickets on the Nozomi (fastest line) between Tokyo and Osaka
- Kansai Thru Pass valid for 3 days
Instead of getting the Whole Japan JR Pass (7 days) which has an extra charge for the Nozomi Train ticket, why not save US$130 and get the Klook Value Rail Pass?
I wish we had this option when we were going to Japan! This is probably the cheapest way to get around, while having access to the fastest Nozomi line when you take the Shinkansen.
To avoid fumbling for tickets at the station booths, I recommend booking this pass online to get e-tickets. This makes it super convenient and fuss-free especially for a foreigner.
