You may even hear the occasional bagpipe performance on the beach, or a wedding photoshoot happening somewhere.
3. Visit the Carmel Mission Basilica
One of the places where you can witness Carmel’s rich history is the Carmel Mission Basilica. It was founded in 1770 by Father Junipero Serra, and gives us a glimpse into California’s Spanish colonial past. Overall, this place shows you the mission’s role in shaping the cultural heritage of the region. It’s also nice that this beautifully preserved basilica has relaxing gardens surrounding it.

5. Enjoy Carmel Wine Tasting
If you’re staying the night in Carmel, consider going wine tasting in one of the 18 tasting rooms. Monterey County is one of California’s premium wine regions, and many of the best wines can be found in Carmel.

Knowledgeable guides often share insights into the winemaking process and its production history within the region. Many tasting rooms are located within walking distance of each other, allowing you to leisurely explore Carmel between sips.
We peeked into these wine tasting rooms as we passed by some courtyards. These places look really nice and we definitely look forward to a wine tasting excursion one day.
6. See Tor House and Hawk Tower
For a touch of literary and architectural history, a visit to Tor House and Hawk Tower is a must. The person who built this stone sanctuary is a poet named Robinson Jeffers.
You can go on guided tours that give you glimpses into the life and work of Jeffers, including inspiration behind his poetry and the construction of Tor House and Hawk Tower. The ocean views from the property make it feel extra magical. It also definitely adds to the rugged beauty of the California coast.
7. Dine at the best restaurants
Another reason why people like Carmel is because of its amazing culinary scene that offers a diverse range of dining experiences. From farm-to-table eateries to seafood-centric fine dining, Carmel is paradise for foodies! You’ll definitely enjoy the high quality ingredients and creative dishes in the top restaurants here.
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at La Bicyclette, a European-style bistro that was Michelin-rated in 2019 and 2021. The dishes we ordered really exceeded expectations – lobster and prawn linguine, spinach gnocchi, and mushroom pizza. On top of that the cosy interior decor and atmosphere also helped us to feel right at home.
8. Check out Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch
One of the places that often gets overlooked in Carmel is Mission Ranch. This historic property, which was initially meant to be redeveloped, was rescued by Clint Eastwood, the former mayor of Carmel. Mission Ranch is now a picturesque inn and restaurant with sweeping views of the surrounding meadows and Point Lobos.
The restaurant is known for its classic American fare with a gourmet twist amidst this fantastic location. The ambiance is rustic yet elegant, and the outdoor patio seats have the best views of the landscape. Try to look out for the sheep that graze in the meadows! I’m sure this will be a unique experience in Carmel you’ll never forget.
9. Explore secret passageways
Carmel’s charm lies not only in its well-known attractions but also in its hidden passageways and courtyards. As you wander through the cobblestone streets, look out for these places highlighted in the official Carmel guide. I recommend marking them out on Google Maps, and adding a note about its history or significance. This is so that you won’t see it as just another Instagram-able place. It felt pretty fun to search them out as if they were part of a treasure hunt.
One of the popular spots is the Tuck Box Courtyard. The Tuck Box is an iconic fairytale cottage that was built by Hugh Comstock in 1926 to house an artist’s rare shawls and antique collection. Later on, it was purchased by a Stanford art professor who helped to add on the courtyard as well as the surrounding buildings. If you look into the Tuck Box, you’ll see a quaint little tea time setup.
10. Tour in a Classic Vehicle
However, you’ll never stop taking pictures of your ride if you rent a classic vehicle for your Carmel adventure. It adds a touch of vintage glamour that is perfectly suited to the town’s aesthetic. This can also be a great idea for a romantic date or celebration of a special event.
There are several tour companies that offer guided excursions in beautifully restored cars. Imagine cruising along Ocean Avenue in a convertible, with the wind in your hair as you explore the streets in your cool ride.
These tours often include visits to iconic landmarks, hidden gems, and historical sites. Whether you choose a convertible or a vintage truck, this nostalgic experience is one of the best things to do in Carmel.
11. Walk along Ocean Avenue
Another way to enjoy the lively atmosphere in Carmel is by taking a leisurely walk along Ocean Avenue. This is where most people will be as it is lined with boutique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes. If this is your first time to Carmel, you’ll definitely want to immerse yourself in the heart of Carmel here at Ocean Avenue.
The architecture along Ocean Avenue reflects the town’s European-inspired aesthetic, creating the perfect backdrop for photos along this street. Don’t forget to continue looking out for hidden courtyards here.
You can also browse the boutiques shops for local crafts, explore art galleries, and stop for coffee or a sweet treat at one of the quaint cafes. We saw a long line outside Carmel Bakery in the late afternoon, so we skipped ahead to Carmel Valley Roasting Co.
