What to look out for in a Glass Igloo?

If you see a “cheaper” Glass Igloo, especially in winter, there might be a few key amenities that are excluded. Here are several things to consider when choosing your ideal Glass Igloo.

  • Air-conditioning or heating
  • Heating on the glass windows – to prevent snow from blocking the views
  • Size of Glass Igloo
  • Availability of shower and bathroom inside the Glass Igloo
  • Distance to the main building
  • Distance to the nearest restaurant
  • Distance between Glass Igloos for privacy reasons
  • Availability of kitchenette to prepare your own meal
  • Portage service – it is not the norm for baggage to be handled by the staff
  • Fee required for private facility bookings like saunas and jacuzzis
  • Minimum nights required for winter season or discounts offered during autumn
  • Cost of airport transfer in case you don’t have a car

When in doubt, check the reviews from multiple sites before booking your stay.

Tips For Watching Northern Lights in Glass Igloos In Finland

Finland Glass Igloos for Northern Lights

In general, the chances of seeing Northern Lights increases the further north you go. The Glass Igloos we have chosen are located in Finland Lapland, which means that they are in the Arctic Circle.

Having dark night skies is also very important for a good Northern Lights viewing experience, similar to stargazing. The best time in the night is usually 10pm to 2am as it will be the darkest. However, cloud cover might prevent you from seeing anything, so sometimes you need to wait for the clouds to pass. Some Glass Igloo hotels even provide Northern Light alerts so that you don’t miss them.

Lastly the KP Index gives a good indication of how intense the Northern Lights can get. It is a measure of the amount of geomagnetic activity in the Earth’s atmosphere, scored from 0 to 10. The average night in Finland Lapland has KP index of 1 to 3, which is good enough for Northern Lights to become visible.

Here are some useful resources for stargazing and Northern Lights chasing:

  • Aurora Reach website/app that forecasts and monitors Northern Light activity with community check-ins and mobile alerts
  • Night Sky App shows the constellations, Milky Way position, and compass direction as you point your phone to the sky
  • Space weather in Finland shows the estimated probability of Northern Lights based on region
