These day trips have been chosen based on a travel distance of up to 2 hours one way, so that we have enough time to enjoy the destination. It also gives you some time to buffer for heavy traffic, which may increase your total driving time.
Depending on your driving stamina, you could also expand your range to a 3 hour drive time which gets you to Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea which are further south, or Redding and Mendocino in the north coast. However, if you’re driving for a few hours in a day, I think it may be better for you to stay overnight there instead so you can have more energy and time exploring.
Let’s take a look at these San Francisco day trips starting from north bay, then further south along the peninsula, and also venturing over to east bay. This way, you’ll also get a taste of the best hikes in the Bay Area.

The best thing to do in Muir Woods is to go on a hike. You can hike along the Redwood Creek Trail, which is the main trail in Muir Woods. It is an easy 2 hour round trip hike that crosses 4 different bridges on flat and hard ground, suitable for those with accessibility needs.
The total distance is 2 miles (3.2 km) with just 30 ft (9 m) elevation gain, starting from the Muir Woods Visitor Center. An alternate way to complete the loop is to cross over to an elevated forest trail called Hillside Trail, where you can enjoy a different perspective of the forest.
On this trail, you will first pass by the Founders Grove with the Pinchot Tree followed by the Cathedral Grove, and the Bohemian Grove on the way back to the Visitor Center.
If you’re looking for something more challenging, consider trying the Fern Creek, Lost, and Canopy trail loop. There are also some other trails you can check out, and don’t forget to save this map for reference.

Where to eat
There is a cafe just after the Visitor Center where you can get a quick bite after your hike. You can also find some restaurants in the nearby town of Mill Valley.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Muir Woods is from May to October because November to April might have more rainy days. However, it can be a really nice experience visiting Muir Woods on the morning after the rain.

Monterey is a city rich in historical significance, while Carmel-by-the-Sea draws people in with its European-style aesthetic. The proximity to the coast allows for impromptu sunset views from downtown Carmel, and is a great destination for the weekend.
Distance from San Francisco
Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea are a scenic 120-mile drive from San Francisco, and it takes just under 2 hours to get there without traffic. This suggestion is right on the edge of our driving time threshold of 2 hours for a day trip. However, note that going on a day trip from San Francisco on weekends would inevitably result in a longer drive duration.
Things to do
Monterey is famous for its world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium, and you can easily explore the historic Cannery Row thats located nearby.
If you’re looking for a sunset spot, embark on a drive down 17-Mile Drive which connects Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Another great spot to relax and watch the waves is Carmel Beach.

Why you should come here
Napa Valley is one of the most famous wine regions in the world, known for its rolling vineyards and luxurious wine tasting experiences. I love the countryside vibe and it feels like a totally different side of California. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or foodie, it’s an ideal day trip for enjoying the finer things in life.
Distance from San Francisco
Napa Valley is about 60 miles north of San Francisco, roughly 1.5-hour drive away.
Things to do
One of the must-do activities in Napa Valley is wine tasting, and don’t miss popular wineries like Castello di Amorosa, Domaine Carneros, or Opus One. If you’re unsure of what types of wine you want to try and which wineries to visit, let some local experts take you around to check out boutique wineries through a small group wine tour.
If you’re looking for a mix of outdoors and wine tasting, check out the trails at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park or the Skyline Wilderness Park. The Silverado Trail is also known to be a scenic drive with wineries lining both sides of the road all the way from downtown Napa to St Helena.
Where to eat
When it comes to food, bring your highest expectations as Yountville has a few Michelin-star restaurants. The most popular ones is The French Laundry where you’ll need to make reservations way in advance. For something more casual, check out Bouchon Bistro, Oxbow Public Market, Gott’s Roadside, or Oakville Grocery. The Auberge is another popular restaurant as it overlooks the vineyards from the hill.
Best time to visit
Napa Valley is great for year-round trips, though it get busiest during summer when the valley is lively and full of events. Fall is the harvest season and spring enjoys mild weather. There really isn’t a bad time to visit Napa Valley, and we visited in November when the weather was just starting to get colder. I would avoid rainy days, but winter is also peaceful time to visit, and perhaps more affordable.
